Vehicle and control-system conditions
The source tutorial describes a CK kit for 2010–2019 Mercedes-Benz ML, GL, GLE and GLS vehicles with chassis codes 166 or 292. It supports replacing an existing three-color ambient-lighting system with 12 colors. Vehicles without factory ambient lighting require replacement interior trim parts as well as the lighting kit.
Identify the installed head unit before choosing the control and coding route:
- ML / GL with NTG4.5: the 12 colors are controlled from the instrument cluster through its three-color selection menu.
- GLE / GLS with NTG5.1: the 12 colors are controlled from the factory head-unit display; programming is required.
The parts illustration is specifically headed “2012–2015 ML-W166,” while the body describes the broader range above. The shared wiring illustration also names other models. These illustrations do not independently confirm every year, trim or vehicle configuration; confirm the actual kit, trim and control-system match before installation.
1. Parts and optional trim
The numbered parts illustration identifies:
- Four ambient-lighting control modules, identified by door position: FL (front left), FR (front right), RL (rear left) and RR (rear right). The pictured FR module is labeled the main transmitter (Tx); the other pictured modules are receivers (Rx).
- The dashboard lighting harness.
- Footwell lights.
- Door-handle lights.
Match each module to its labeled door position. The labels shown in this photograph describe the pictured kit and do not establish compatibility with a different module version.
The next illustration shows the kit for upgrading factory three-color lighting to 12 colors and optional interior trim in a carbon-fiber-style finish and two wood-look finishes. The source does not specify a complete trim-parts list for every vehicle without factory ambient lighting.
2. Wiring overview
The diagram shows the relationship between the four door lighting modules, door-handle lights, door-trim lights, dashboard lights, and front and rear footwell lights. The installation photographs route the dashboard lighting harness from the right-front door module through the right-front A-pillar area.
This is a layout diagram, not a connector pinout. It does not specify wire functions, numbered connector cavities, power protection or grounding. Its title lists CLS and older E-Class models in addition to ML / GL / older GLE / older GLS; that shared title does not extend this tutorial's stated vehicle scope.
3. Door trim and door-light installation
The source photographs show these operations:
- Remove the front-door trim screws at the circled positions, including the screw exposed below the armrest trim.
- Remove the concealed door-panel retaining clip shown near the upper edge of the panel.
- For the rear door, remove the screws at the pictured positions, including the screw behind the rear tweeter area.
- With the door panel removed, undo the circled screws on its reverse side and remove the trim panel.
- Replace the door-handle light and the door-trim edge light at the pictured locations.
- Connect the door ambient-lighting module through the door-control-unit connection marked “3#” in the photograph. This mark identifies the pictured connection; it is not an instruction to use pin 3.
The source gives access photographs but does not give a complete door-panel release/reinstallation procedure or tightening specifications. Follow the confirmed procedure for the actual vehicle and do not infer hidden fasteners or connector pin assignments from the photographs.
4. Dashboard and center-console access
4.1 Harness routing and center assembly
- Route the harness through the right-front door / A-pillar area as illustrated. The source explicitly requires the male and female terminal wires to match correctly; it does not supply a numbered terminal map.
- Pull the head-unit surround out by hand. Control the force to avoid damaging the surround.
- Remove the circled display screws and lift the display upward.
- Remove the climate-control panel at the pictured clip positions.
- Remove the head-unit support screws, then pull the support fully downward as indicated by the arrows.
- Remove the circled air-vent screws and take out the center air-vent assembly.
- Remove the side trim panels shown in the final photograph.
The first photograph also identifies the right-front module, the dashboard lamp-head route and the front footwell-light branches.
4.2 Dashboard trim, lamp heads and harness
- Release the right-side air vent using a large flat-blade screwdriver at the circled load point shown in the source photograph.
- Remove the dashboard trim from the outer right-hand end toward the center, following the pictured arrow and clip positions.
- Remove the trim to the left of the instrument cluster. Avoid damaging the background-light switch and its locating pin; the next photograph shows that pin separately.
- Assemble the dashboard trim panel with the pictured screws.
- Route the lighting harness along the rear of the dashboard trim. The labeled branch connects to the trim beside the instrument cluster; the other labeled branch connects to the right-front door.
- Secure the lamp head with tape as pictured. Bring the harness out through the illustrated dashboard-trim wire exit.
- The overview shows the dashboard lamp-head route and the two front footwell-light branches. The final photograph shows rotating the center panel to fit it back into position.
The source does not specify the release force, tape type, fastening torque, protected wiring clearances or a complete reassembly check. Confirm those details for the actual vehicle and kit rather than treating the photographs as a universal trim-removal procedure.
5. Color control and programming
5.1 GLE / GLS: factory head-unit control
On the head unit's 12-color ambient-lighting color-selection screen, use the factory rotary controller:
- Rotate the controller to change the selected color.
- Left → Right → Left: breathing effect in the currently selected color. The source's table specifies one counterclockwise step, one clockwise step, then one counterclockwise step.
- Right → Left → Right: breathing through all 12 colors, starting from red. The table specifies one clockwise step, one counterclockwise step, then one clockwise step.
Mercedes-Benz computer coding reference
The source screenshots show the following example settings:
- HU5S1,
[018] Car Functions Coding:Ambient Light=on;Color Ambient Light=extended. - Front SAM / CBCBOLERO,
[010] ILC VC Parameter:PILC_AmBIEnable=ja. - EZS166 gateway,
[002] Global Variantenkodierung:Ambientes Licht vorhanden=verfügbar.
These are the values visible in the source screenshots, not a universal coding file. The tutorial does not provide a verified ECU/software-version matrix, connection procedure, coding-write sequence or recovery procedure. Use coding instructions confirmed for the actual vehicle and installed kit; do not copy the raw coding bytes displayed in the screenshots.
OBD programming reference
The source labels this section “CheYiSheng OBD Programming.” Its pictured GLE / GLS ambient-lighting page shows options for lighting off, one color, three colors and 12 colors, with 12 colors selected. It also shows a button to query the current vehicle state and a button to apply the selected option.
The red condition on that screenshot says the ambient-lighting type option is only for vehicles fitted with CheZhiLian three-color or 12-color ambient-lighting products. The tutorial does not establish which programmer/device version is compatible with this CK kit or reconcile the two names. Confirm that compatibility before applying the screenshot's option.
5.2 ML / GL: instrument-cluster control
The illustrated menu route is Settings → Lighting → Ambient lighting. On the instrument cluster's three-color selection screen, use the directional buttons on the left side of the steering wheel:
- Up → Down → Up: breathing in the currently selected color. The source labels the selection movement as cool color → intermediate color → cool color.
- Down → Up → Down: breathing through all 12 colors, starting from red. The source labels the selection movement as warm color → intermediate color → warm color.
Single-color breathing uses the currently selected color.
Small-screen vehicle coding
The source states that vehicles with the small-screen configuration must have the instrument cluster programmed/coded with the Mercedes-Benz computer; color changes are then controlled from the instrument cluster.
The example screenshot uses IC172, domain [006] 06 Menüaktivierung, and shows Ambientes Licht and Ambientes Licht Farbe set to vorhanden (present). The source does not verify that ECU identifier or its displayed coding bytes for every ML / GL vehicle, so the screenshot is a reference for the two menu functions rather than a universal coding prescription.
6. Troubleshooting and synchronization
6.1 One lamp has the wrong color
If one lamp head is out of sync, check that its plug is fully seated and that no terminal has come loose. Swap the lamp heads between positions to determine whether the fault follows the lamp head, then replace the damaged lamp head identified by that check.
6.2 ML / GL: only one color, or no ambient light
The source body says to check the DIP-switch settings of all four door modules and check the instrument-cluster coding. It also says the modules' factory-default switch setting is for GLE / GLS.
However, the supplied switch chart does not clearly resolve that ML / GL instruction. Its small-screen row names pre-2019 GLE / GLS 166 / 292 and 2013–2018 A / B / CLA / GLA, while the large-screen row is also shown with other-model wording. The four ON/OFF columns have no switch numbers or verified orientation. Do not apply a guessed ML / GL setting from this chart; obtain the switch map for the actual module version and vehicle.
6.3 ML / GL: one door is out of sync
The source requires a synchronization-learning operation if one door remains out of sync after installation:
- Open the instrument-cluster ambient-lighting menu.
- Select any one color and press OK to confirm it.
- Press and hold the Up button on the left side of the steering wheel until the ambient lights throughout the vehicle flash rapidly and reset, as described in the source.
This continuous Up-button hold is the synchronization/reset operation. The short Up → Down → Up sequence in Section 5 is a breathing-mode command.
The source states that GLE / GLS with the large-screen head unit synchronize automatically. It does not specify a hold duration or a separate post-reset acceptance test.
