The source guide covers model-year 2021–2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 213 vehicles with existing ambient lighting. It illustrates a replacement instrument-frame light, a lighting module and an adapter harness. Confirm that the light and module match the vehicle's equipment before installation; the model-year range alone does not establish compatibility.
1. Parts overview
Figure 1. Instrument frame, lighting module and adapter harness.
2. Wiring layout and precautions
Before connecting or disconnecting plugs, disconnect vehicle power as required by the vehicle's service procedure and keep the ignition in the OFF position. The source does not specify the power-disconnection method or reconnection procedure.
Figure 2. The illustrated route leads from the instrument frame to the right-front footwell light connector and module.
If illuminated front air vents are also being retrofitted, the source recommends connecting the instrument-frame light harness at the white connector for the middle light on the added front-vent harness. Confirm the exact harness version and connector before using this alternative route.
3. Instrument-frame removal and replacement
The following is a reading guide to the ten photographs in Figure 3, in order:
- Release the upper dashboard trim with a plastic trim tool.
- Remove the instrument-cluster mounting screws with a T20 driver.
- Release the metal locking tabs at the mounting-screw positions.
- Release the lower instrument-cluster clips, then unplug the rear connectors.
- Remove the existing instrument frame with its light unit and harness.
- Release the metal retaining clip for the lower frame light.
- Release the upper light's retaining clip from the side.
- Remove the existing frame-light unit and its wiring.
- Reconnect the blue connector for the existing instrument-frame light.
- Wrap and secure the wiring removed from the existing instrument frame.
Figure 3. Ten source photographs showing trim, cluster and light-unit removal and the retained wiring.
The photographs do not give a complete replacement-module connection diagram, fastener tightening values or a detailed cluster refitting procedure. Confirm these for the actual kit and vehicle before continuing; do not infer terminal assignments from wire colors or the photograph alone.
3.1 Right-front footwell adapter
Figure 4 uses the phrase “locating pins” for the projections on the black and white connector housings. It refers to the housing locating features, not the electrical terminals. Do not cut terminals or wires. Confirm the intended locating features and the matching adapter with the kit supplier before modifying a housing; stop if they cannot be identified confidently.
Figure 4. Source illustration of connector-housing locating features. The image does not establish a terminal pinout.
3.2 Reassembly and operation check
Restore all disturbed connectors and trim using the verified vehicle and kit procedures, then check the ambient-light operation. The source's completed-installation photograph is shown below.
Figure 5. Completed-installation example.
4. Troubleshooting
Keep power disconnected during connector inspection or substitution; restore power only through the applicable service procedure for an operation check.
- Instrument-frame light does not illuminate: confirm that the lighting module matches the vehicle. Inspect the module input connector, right-front footwell adapter, wiring and any bent or deformed terminals. Check whether the right-front footwell light displays an ambient-light color. The source suggests locking the vehicle and allowing it to sleep for 10 minutes, then entering, closing the door, switching on the ignition and adjusting the ambient lighting to check whether it wakes up.
- Existing center-console ambient light does not illuminate: inspect the retained instrument-frame light wiring. Check that the blue connector removed during installation has been reconnected, and inspect its terminals and wiring.
- Other existing ambient lights do not illuminate: check every connector disturbed during this installation or any other work performed at the same time. The source suggests a 10-minute locked-vehicle sleep cycle and, if required, ambient-light addressing. It does not provide the addressing procedure; obtain the verified procedure for the specific vehicle and kit rather than guessing a programming sequence.
