This guide covers 2014–2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 222 vehicles with factory 7-color or 64-color ambient lighting. The replacement vents use the illustrated adapter harness and retain the vent opening/closing adjustment. Confirm that the supplied module program and harness match the vehicle's lighting version before installation.
1. Components
Figure 1. Kit components.
2. Wiring layout and connection requirements
Figure 2. Overall layout for front and rear illuminated vents. The factory door-module adapter connection is white connector No. 3. The label “Female plug” in this image refers to that No. 3 connection. Place the added module inside the door panel and route the pass-through harness along the existing door harness.
The original guide says to match the wire colors on the two sides of the door pass-through connector. It does not identify numbered cavities, electrical signals, terminal specifications or the applicable 7-color/64-color harness versions. Do not select an unused cavity or assign a terminal from wire color alone. Obtain the cavity-by-cavity harness chart for the exact supplied kit and vehicle before inserting the additional terminals shown in Figures 6 and 7.
The source also omits the power-isolation procedure, connector-release tooling and screw torques. Obtain the applicable vehicle/kit procedure before disconnecting wiring or releasing terminal inserts; the photographs do not supply those parameters.
3. Installation procedure
3.1. Remove the front door panel
Figure 3. Front door disassembly. Several image captions are incomplete or mistranslated; the sequence is:
- Use a plastic trim tool to release the clip at the front end of the decorative strip.
- Release the clip at the rear end of the strip.
- Remove the strip after its retaining clips are disengaged.
- Remove the two door-panel screws with a T30 driver.
- Use the plastic trim tool at the lower edge of the door panel to disengage the clips.
- Pull the door panel horizontally outward from its clip locations. The image's “Push-out” wording is incorrect.
- Release the large outer retaining clip shown.
- Release the inner door-handle cable retaining clip; this instruction is covered by a blank red block in the image.
- Disconnect the midrange-speaker plug and the blue factory door-module connectors No. 5 and No. 6 shown in the final panels.
3.2. Remove the front air vents and trim
Figure 4. Vent and trim removal, in image order:
- Pry off the side triangular trim.
- Remove the left triangular trim using the plastic trim tool.
- Locate the pull-hook holes inside both side vents. The corresponding image caption is blank.
- Insert the hook and pull the right vent out; do not interpret “Remove right-side vent hook” as the part-removal instruction.
- Remove the left vent in the same way.
- Remove the retrofitted silver keyless-start button shown, where fitted.
- Remove the silver ignition-switch trim ring.
- Open the center-console cigarette-lighter/ashtray compartment and remove its two T20 screws.
- Use the plastic trim tool to release the vent trim by the display.
- Press the lower retaining clips of the center-vent panel and remove it.
- Release the dashboard trim-panel clips with the plastic trim tool.
- Remove the panel after its retaining clips are disengaged and disconnect its harness plugs. This instruction is blank in the image.
3.3. Assemble the center vents
Figure 5. Center vent assembly:
- Remove the original center-vent screws with a T20 driver.
- Release the original air-duct retaining clips.
- Transfer the original silver polished front trim ring to the illuminated vent. “Silver brightness ring” in the image means this trim ring, not a lighting adjustment.
- Fit the assembly through the openings indicated by the arrows and secure it with the original T20 screws.
The two side vents are direct replacements and do not require this assembly process.
3.4. Door pass-through wiring: vehicle-interior side
Complete the connector mapping and power-isolation checks in Section 2 before carrying out the following terminal work. The source shows added terminals in unused cavities but does not identify which cavities to use.
Figure 6. Vehicle-interior-side sequence. Blank caption blocks omit several instructions; the source describes:
- The additional male/female pass-through terminals occupy unused cavities of the factory connector, subject to the confirmed kit cavity map.
- Remove the lower-cover screws with a T20 driver.
- Release the central lower-cover clip and remove the cover.
- Release the plug/socket locking tab.
- Route the pass-through wires at the A-pillar as shown, following the existing harness path.
- Cut the harness cable tie shown, then press the connector release and withdraw the female-terminal connector insert. This instruction refers to the tie, not cutting a wire.
- Release the insert's retaining tabs and push the female-terminal insert out of the housing.
- The source's final close-up shows supplied female pass-through terminals being fitted to the designated unused cavities. Its English caption incorrectly says “male pins.” Use the confirmed cavity map; the close-up does not establish terminal assignments.
3.5. Door pass-through wiring: door side
Figure 7. Door-side sequence. The source captions describe:
- Push the locking plate out as pictured.
- Press the release and withdraw the factory male connector.
- Route the supplied male pass-through wires along the existing harness through the door conduit.
- Release the connector-housing retaining clips and disassemble the housing.
- Release the clips and push the male-terminal locking strip out.
- Fit the supplied male terminals into the cavities specified by the confirmed kit harness chart. Several corresponding English image captions are blank.
- Connect the module adapter to the factory door module's white connector No. 3 as shown.
3.6. Route and conceal the vent-light wiring
Figure 8. Front-vent light harness routing:
- Identify the left-and-center-vent branch and the right-vent branch in the wiring layout; some branch labels remain in Chinese or are blank in the image.
- Route the front-vent light wires along the pictured dashboard path and route the left light branch toward the center.
- Release the retaining clips of the fuse carrier at the left triangular-trim area to make room for the wire route shown. This is a routing step; the source does not instruct a power connection to the fuse carrier.
- Route the harness at the left triangular trim as pictured.
- Secure and check the wiring connections, refit the removed parts and check vent and lighting operation.
4. Troubleshooting
Use the confirmed vehicle/kit disconnection procedure before unplugging or exchanging components. Match the replacement light units to the supplied kit version.
- Factory ambient lighting does not illuminate: check for connectors that were not reconnected. If all factory connections are restored, switch off the ignition, shut down the engine, lock the vehicle and allow it to sleep for 10 minutes, as described in the source. If the lights remain off, remove the added module's power adapter from connector No. 3 using the confirmed disconnection procedure and check whether factory operation returns.
- None of the front-vent lights illuminate: check that the factory lighting version matches the module program. Check the power adapter at connector No. 3, the male/female pass-through connections and the interior-side light harness against the confirmed kit connection chart.
- Some front-vent lights do not illuminate: change the selected ambient-light color and check for a missing color. Compare matching light units using the confirmed disconnection procedure to see whether the fault follows a light unit.
- Front-vent brightness is uneven: check that the light units are seated, inspect the light path for breaks and look for foreign material obstructing light transmission. Compare matching light units using the confirmed disconnection procedure.
- Front-vent airflow is abnormal: check whether a vent knob detached during installation, whether all factory connectors were reconnected, and whether the left/right airflow settings on the climate-control panel match.
