The source describes installation on 2016–2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 213 vehicles. Coding is required to enable the functions; the interface appears on the vehicle display and is accessed from the climate-control panel. Coding differs with the model year's head unit. The programmer examples at the end are specifically labeled 2016–2017 E-Class; they do not establish the procedure for every year in the source's broader range.
1. Product components
Figure 1 shows the fragrance unit, negative-ion generator (ionizer), mounting parts, wiring and hose supplied for the illustrated installation. It is a component photograph, not a complete labeled inventory or confirmation that other part revisions use the same wiring.
2. Wiring routes and source connection list
Figure 2 reading guide: the ionizer sits behind the main display in the illustrated installation. The fragrance unit is on the passenger side; the hose runs toward the center of the dashboard. The red dashed routes lead to the climate-control module, glovebox lamp, chassis ground and passenger-side fuse box.
The source gives the following connections. Confirm the actual connector identity and numbered terminal orientation against the vehicle and kit wiring information before connecting them. These numbers identify the particular pictured connections; wire colors alone do not establish a matching circuit.
| Kit connection | Source destination |
|---|---|
| Ionizer pin 1 | Climate-control module pin 15 |
| Ionizer pin 2 | Climate-control module pin 13 |
| Ionizer pin 3 | Climate-control module pin 5 |
| Fragrance unit pin 1 | Climate-control module pin 13 |
| Fragrance unit pin 3 | Passenger-side fuse box MF2, source notation “6#”; Figure 7 depicts position 6 of the blue connector |
| Fragrance unit pin 4 | Chassis ground |
| Fragrance unit pin 6 | Passenger glovebox-lamp connector, source notation “3P3#”; Figure 7 depicts pin 3 |
The source's precaution paragraph also suggests splicing fragrance pin 3 into “any wire” of MF2. That general wording does not identify a verified circuit and is not sufficient for choosing a wire. Obtain confirmation of the exact MF2 circuit, connector/position and fuse rating for this installation before making that connection. The source does not reconcile the fuse/terminal wording or provide the terminal specification. For fragrance pin 6, it mentions the glovebox lamp's gray wire as an alternative splice; confirm the numbered circuit rather than choosing it solely by color.
3. Preparation
The source specifically requires disconnecting the battery negative terminal before dismantling or refitting the passenger-footwell fuse box to avoid a short circuit. Use the vehicle-specific battery isolation and reconnection procedure; the source does not describe that procedure in full.
The hose can be trimmed to suit its route. Keep it free of kinks that could prevent fragrance delivery. The source also permits a suitable passenger-side mounting location for the ionizer, while Figure 5 shows a particular installation behind the display. Confirm the mounting method and required clearances for the actual part before making the illustrated duct opening.
The photographs use a trim-prying tool and flathead screwdriver to release clips, a T20 driver for the labeled screws, and self-tapping screws for the fragrance base. They do not specify fastener torques, self-tapping screw dimensions or a duct-cutting tool/size.
4. Display and driver-side access
Read Figure 3 from top to bottom:
- Pry up the clip-held trim above the main display.
- Use a T20 driver to remove the three red-circled display mounting screws.
- Release the illustrated locking/locating tabs at the display screw mounts.
- Release the retaining clips at the upper edge of the display.
- Disconnect the illustrated vehicle wiring plugs and remove the display.
- Pry off the triangular trim at the driver's dashboard end.
- Remove the driver's door-sill trim.
- Remove the clip-held trim beneath the leftmost air vent.
The pictures show a left-hand-drive layout. They do not provide a separate right-hand-drive routing or mounting procedure.
5. Passenger-side access
Read Figure 4 from top to bottom:
- Pry off the passenger-side triangular dashboard-end trim.
- Release the retaining clips securing the lamp wiring harness.
- Remove the passenger-side door-sill trim. The English image's “flash guard” wording refers to this sill trim.
- Release the clips holding the long dashboard trim with the center vents.
- Disconnect its vehicle wiring plugs and lamp connection.
- Use a T20 driver to remove the passenger-side lower-panel securing screw. The English image incorrectly calls this the driver's side.
- Release the passenger-side lower-panel retaining clips. This is a release action, not simply a label identifying a “fixed clip.”
- Remove the illustrated T20 glovebox securing screws at the bottom and top.
- Disconnect the glovebox-lamp plug.
The image's “harness limit feet” and “mounting feet” mean retaining clips/tabs, not additional mounting hardware. Confirm the vehicle-specific connector-release and refitting procedure where the photographs omit it.
6. Mount the fragrance unit and ionizer
Read Figure 5 from top to bottom:
- Remove the complete glovebox assembly.
- Remove the cover over the glovebox's prepared opening shown in the red outline.
- Secure the fragrance-unit base with the illustrated self-tapping screws.
- Fit and secure the fragrance unit.
- The final panel shows an opening in the air duct behind the main display and the ionizer mounted there.
Before cutting the duct or fitting self-tapping screws, obtain the required opening location/dimensions, screw specification and securing/sealing method for the actual parts. Those details are not supplied by this image. The source's general passenger-side mounting statement does not resolve them.
7. Climate-control module connections
Figure 6 starts with the kit connector views: the ionizer harness is labeled 1/2/3; the fragrance harness is labeled 1/3/4/6. Keep the pictured view orientation distinct from the mating connector view.
The remaining panels show unplugging the climate-control module connector, releasing its outer housing at the marked tabs and removing the inner insert. Its source connection sequence is:
- Ionizer pin 2 and fragrance pin 1 connect to climate-control pin 13.
- Ionizer pin 3 connects to climate-control pin 5.
- Ionizer pin 1 connects to climate-control pin 15.
The source describes joining these wires to the corresponding existing circuits. It does not specify the splice/crimp method, conductor sizes or terminal part numbers. Obtain that information and confirm the actual climate-control connector pinout before modifying its wiring; do not derive it from the photograph's wire colors alone.
8. Hose, fuse-box, lamp and ground connections
Read Figure 7 from top to bottom:
- Follow the arrow to the existing hose port beside the center speaker. Route and connect the fragrance hose without kinks.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal using the vehicle-specific procedure before dismantling the passenger-side fuse box.
- Release the illustrated fuse-box housing and remove the blue wiring connector.
- The source shows a female terminal on fragrance pin 3 fitted to position 6 of that blue connector. Confirm that this is the correct MF2 connection for the actual vehicle and resolve the source's “fuse 6#” wording before fitting a terminal.
- The source shows a female terminal on fragrance pin 6 connected to pin 3 of the glovebox-lamp connector.
- Connect fragrance pin 4 to the illustrated chassis ground point using the specified vehicle/kit fastening procedure.
The source does not specify either female-terminal type, a fuse rating, the splice alternative's verified circuit, or the ground-point torque. Confirm those details before completing these electrical connections.
9. Function activation
The following screenshots illustrate selections in different modules and tools. Establish the installed head unit, climate-control module and supported tool version before coding. Enable a function only after its corresponding hardware is installed, as stated in the programmer screenshots.
Figure 8 reading guide: the HU5ENTRY (UDS_CAN_D) example uses domain [033] AirCondition Write. Aircondition Ionization and Air Condition Scent Generation are shown as installed. The lower “Read from ECU” field reports Error: Negative response received (10). This image is not evidence that coding was successfully written or verified.
Figure 9 reading guide: the HU6 (UDS_CAN_D) example uses domain [038] Aircondition Write. It shows the scent-generation and ionization selections as installed, and reports Error: Negative response received (0) in the read field. It is a different head-unit example, not an additional step to apply automatically after Figure 8.
Figure 10 reading guide: the HVAC222 (UDS_CAN_D) example uses domain [010] Konfigurationskodierung Schreiben. The highlighted entries are SA Beduftung Code 210K verbaut (fragrance installed) and SA Ionisierung Code 211K verbaut (ionization installed). 211K is the displayed option code, not evidence that this instruction applies to another chassis or to every E-Class 213. The read field again reports Error: Negative response received (0).
For all three examples, obtain the matching configuration instructions and a successful coding/readback record for the actual vehicle. Their selected values and arrows alone do not confirm function activation.
Figure 11 reading guide: the Cheyisheng programmer page is explicitly titled Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2016–2017), fragrance coding. Enable is selected. Its warning says not to code this function without the fragrance hardware installed. The Query, Set and Restore buttons are visible, but no completed write/readback is shown.
Figure 12 reading guide: the separate 2016–2017 E-Class page is for ionizer coding, with Enable selected. Its warning likewise requires the ionizer hardware to be installed. The source does not provide corresponding programmer pages or a year-to-head-unit/module mapping for 2018–2023.
10. Use and troubleshooting
Press MENU on the climate-control panel to access the fragrance/ionizer interface.
- The interface does not adjust correctly: check the vehicle-specific coding selections and the wiring connections against the confirmed connector/circuit map.
- Fragrance operation is abnormal: check the wiring and whether the hose is kinked. The source also calls for checking whether the unit produces fragrance with the hose disconnected and whether it engages the fragrance bottle. It does not specify a bottle-engagement diagnostic test or a service mode for that check; obtain the unit-specific procedure before treating either observation as a component-failure diagnosis.
