Application and version selection
The Chinese article lists 2019–2024 Mercedes-Benz A-Class 177 and CLA 118 vehicles for a replacement passenger-side ambient-lighting panel. The parts sheet in Figure 2 is headed “2019–2022 A-Class W177.” Confirm the exact model year, dashboard trim, and lighting configuration with the supplied panel; the photographs do not independently verify every vehicle in the article's wider range.
Select the panel version before following the wiring reference. The source distinguishes three configurations:
| Panel version | Lighting configuration described by the source | Control and module requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Basic version | Vehicles with an aftermarket ambient-lighting system | The panel follows the aftermarket system's color changes. No additional control module is required for this version; it connects directly to the aftermarket right-front footwell light. This does not mean that the panel requires no power. |
| Factory-lighting version | Vehicles with factory ambient lighting | The panel is described as following the factory ambient-lighting colors and requires an added ambient-lighting control module. “Factory-lighting version” describes compatibility; it does not establish that the supplied module is a genuine Mercedes-Benz part. |
| Flowing-light version | Described as suitable for vehicles with either lighting configuration | The source describes a seven-color flowing effect, music response, an independent music-response module, and separate control through a phone app. Its colors are controlled independently. Figure 3 identifies ACC as its power-source category. |
Figure 1. Three panel versions and their different lighting and controller requirements. The English table image still requires correction; use the version distinctions transcribed above.
Parts and controller references
Figure 2 uses 01–03 as version references, not connector or pin numbers:
- 01: Starlight panel for an aftermarket 64-color ambient-lighting system.
- 02: Starlight panel for a vehicle with factory 64-color ambient lighting, shown with its controller and adapter harnesses.
- 03: Starlight panel for the phone-app-controlled, music-response version, shown with its independent controller and wiring.
Figure 2. The illustrated W177 panel configurations. The sheet's 64-color heading does not override the seven-color flowing-effect description for the separate flowing-light version in Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows two different controllers. The upper controller is labeled as a starlight-panel control module for matching factory ambient lighting. Its sticker also lists A/B/CLA/GLA/GLB, but that label alone does not expand this tutorial's A-Class 177 / CLA 118 fitment. The lower controller is for the flowing-light version with independent phone-app control; the source caption states that its power is connected to ACC.
Figure 3. Controller references. These photographs do not provide a complete input-voltage, pinout, fuse, ground, or app-setup specification.
Wiring reference by panel version
- Basic version: The article specifies a direct plug connection to the right-front footwell light of the existing aftermarket ambient-lighting system.
- Factory-lighting version: Figure 4 shows the controller adapter connected at the right-front footwell light. Use the controller and harness intended for that configuration; the source provides no connector cavity assignments.
- Flowing-light version: The lower photograph in Figure 4 shows the fuse area at the right-front footwell. Two areas are marked separately: an upper boxed area labeled constant power and a lower boxed area labeled ACC power. Figure 3's caption specifies ACC for the flowing-light controller. The photograph does not give an exact fuse-slot number, fuse rating, ground location, or connection method. The constant-power marker must not be treated as interchangeable with ACC or as a verified fuse selection for a different vehicle.
Figure 4. The factory-lighting-version adapter at the right-front footwell light and the separate flowing-light power-source reference. The image's English labels need correction to distinguish the two power categories accurately.
Panel-removal and replacement sequence shown in Figure 5
The sequence below transcribes the illustrated installation. The source includes cutting three original locating pins; it is therefore insufficient to describe this as a universally reversible or modification-free replacement. The exact locating-pin change, replacement retention, and applicability must be confirmed for the vehicle and panel before that step.
-
Remove the illustrated instrument display. Remove the instrument-display retaining screws indicated by the red circles in the first photograph, then remove the display as stated in the source caption. No screw-driver size, tightening torque, or electrical-disconnection procedure is provided.
-
Remove the right-side dashboard end trim. The photograph shows a plastic trim tool at the triangular end panel on the passenger side.
-
Remove the right-side air vent. The source caption states that the illustrated vent has no screws. The photo shows the vent pulled out of its dashboard opening.
-
Release the trim-panel retaining fastener. Use the illustrated trim-tool access at the right-hand end of the decorative panel. The source identifies this as removal of the panel's retaining clip/fastener.
-
Remove the original decorative panel from the outer end inward. Follow the direction shown in the photographs, starting at the passenger-side outer end and working inward.
-
Identify the three locating pins shown for modification. The next source caption says to cut off the three original locating pins, with their positions circled in red. Confirm that this modification is required for the exact vehicle and replacement panel before cutting; the source does not supply an approved dimensional or retention specification.
-
Route the extension harness at the shown opening. The source close-up identifies the extension-wire routing location behind the removed panel.
-
Replace the panel and remove the indicated original clips. The next photograph identifies the replacement starlight panel and the original clips to be removed. It does not expressly give a complete clip-transfer, replacement, or retention-check procedure.
-
Connect the plug and route the wiring. The final photograph shows the panel plug and wiring behind the replacement panel. Match this to the selected controller configuration described above; do not infer conductor functions from the colors in the photograph.
Figure 5. Complete source removal and replacement sequence. The source ends at the panel plug and wiring; it does not provide a complete safe-isolation, reassembly, or final vehicle-acceptance procedure.
Troubleshooting
-
A color is missing from the starlight panel. Check that the lighting plug is seated fully, then unplug and reconnect it. Replace a damaged light head or plug if necessary.
-
The panel does not illuminate. Check that the main-harness plug is fully seated and reconnect it. Check that the panel version matches the vehicle's lighting configuration.
-
Some LEDs display different colors while the panel is operating. The source specifies replacement of a damaged LED strip. Identify the faulty part before replacement.
-
The panel does not operate immediately after installation. Select a color in the vehicle's ambient-lighting menu, or lock the vehicle and allow it to sleep for 10 minutes before checking operation again, as the source suggests. This is a troubleshooting check, not a guarantee that every fault will clear or a complete setup procedure for the independent phone-app version.
