Vehicle and kit identification

This archived tutorial demonstrates multicolor ambient lighting on an older Mercedes-Benz GLE, chassis W166. The product image identifies a 2015–2019 GLE W166 kit with 14 lights. The archived page heading says “GLA166,” but its own body, product image and exact installation-video source identify GLE/166. This guide therefore uses GLE W166; it does not establish fitment for a GLA.

The video introduction also lists ML, GL, GLE and GLS with “166.” That broader title card is not a vehicle-by-vehicle fitment list. Confirm the vehicle, head unit, original lighting equipment and supplied kit revision before using the demonstrated connections on a different configuration.

The source describes an upgrade from no ambient lighting, single-color lighting or three-color lighting to 12 selectable colors, including zoned multicolor effects. “14 lights” describes the pictured kit; “12 colors” describes the source's control claim. They are different counts.

Controls and original equipment

The archived Chinese body describes phone control through an app or mini program alongside control from the original vehicle interface. It says programming/coding is required for the original interface and mentions NTG4.5 and NTG5.0. It describes a three-color instrument-cluster interface for the earlier NTG4.5 configuration and a 12-color center-display interface for the later NTG5.0 configuration.

The source places the change around model year 2015 without clearly resolving that boundary. It supplies no coding values, software procedure or configuration-specific compatibility table. Identify the actual head unit and obtain the matching coding instructions; do not choose a coding procedure from the year alone.

Product image and component identification

GLE W166 multicolor ambient-lighting kit and component labels

The eleven numbered groups in this product image are:

  1. Right dashboard ambient-light strip.
  2. Front-door ambient-light strips.
  3. Rear-door ambient-light strips.
  4. Left dashboard ambient-light strip.
  5. Dashboard-strip extension lead.
  6. Adapter power-harness group for the four door control modules.
  7. Four door-handle lights.
  8. Left dashboard-strip adapter lead.
  9. Front and rear footwell-light harnesses.
  10. Extension lead from the right-front door control module to the main lighting module.
  11. One main module and four auxiliary modules.

FL, FR, RL and RR label front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right positions. The pictured housings also carry SPI4, RGB3, RGB2 and RGB1 port markings. Use the labels on the actual supplied modules. Printed “166/292” is a housing label, not proof that this tutorial covers every 292 vehicle.

The video parts card uses a different, ten-group numbering scheme, including separate vehicle-side female-terminal and door-side male-terminal extension leads. Do not transfer the product image's item numbers to the video's parts card. The kit/module differences need confirmation before using either as a wiring specification.

Installation video and demonstrated sequence

The exact archived source is WX-0015, with embedded video identifier wxv_3750196983177478147. The locally attached English draft follows that source's picture timing. The current English media still contains translation errors and untranslated Chinese labels; the written sequence below restores source-supported information without treating those media errors as approved instructions.

  1. Front-door access — 00:19–01:29. The source shows releasing the handle-area trim cover with a plastic trim tool, removing the exposed T30 screw, opening the retaining area and withdrawing the retaining pin. The lower and side panel clips are then released, the panel is supported, and its connectors and handle connection are detached before the panel is set aside. These opening steps were lost under the English draft's “uncertain audio” captions.

  2. Rear-door access — 01:30–02:43. The original tweeter trim is released and its connector unplugged. The source identifies a T30 screw behind it and another screw behind the lower cover, which is retained by two metal clips. After the screws and panel clips are released, the connectors and handle connection are detached.

  3. Door trim and light-guide replacement — 02:44–05:01. With the panel removed, the screws around the trim assembly are removed, followed by the original lamp head and handle assembly. On the demonstrated three-color configuration, the original light guide is replaced with the kit's multicolor strip. The source describes a complete replacement trim assembly for a vehicle without the original light guide. The replacement strip lies flat with its wider face seated in the channel, and the handle lamp clips into its holder. The source also shows a small amount of hot-melt adhesive at loose end retainers; adhesive specification and trim suitability are not supplied. Refit the trim screws after the parts are seated.

  4. Door lighting module — 05:02–05:33. In the demonstrated module arrangement, the strip connects to SPI4 and the handle lamp to RGB3; RGB1 and RGB2 are left unused. A five-position power connector is attached. These are housing/port labels, not a vehicle connector pinout. The video module label and product-image module layout differ, so confirm the supplied revision and its approved diagram before applying this arrangement. Follow the correct FL/FR/RL/RR identification for the four doors.

  5. Center-display and head-unit access — 05:34–07:23. The display's two side covers are released. The source's hard captions identify T20, not the English video's “E20,” for the two display screws. The display is lifted out and its rear connector disconnected. The center trim and climate-control panel are released at their clips, revealing the head-unit fasteners, also captioned T20. The retaining lever is lowered and the unit withdrawn before its connectors are detached.

  6. Dashboard trims and vents — 07:24–09:12. The source removes four screws from the center assembly and releases the tight vent clips before withdrawing it and unplugging its rear connection. The side trim, passenger-side vent and dashboard trim are released, followed by the corresponding driver-side pieces. Support the trim and protect the small linkage rod shown during removal; the source explicitly says not to break it.

  7. Door-to-cabin extension access — 09:13–11:18. The harness includes dashboard lamp connections and the male/female terminal extension leads. The lower trim is removed to expose the connector and its retaining latch. The door-jamb connector's red secondary lock and inner terminal retainer are released as shown. The lower panel and connector inserts are then accessed. The source does not provide a complete connector identification or service-approved release procedure for other configurations.

  8. Power adapter and pass-through routing — 11:19–16:28. The source demonstrates the white adapter at the connector it calls “original connector No. 3,” then routes the extension terminals through the door rubber sleeve and the corresponding cabin-side opening. The demonstration requires matching each extension terminal to its counterpart across the joined connector and refitting the retainers and red secondary lock. Its discussion of empty cavities is not a universal authorization to use any free cavity: no definitive vehicle pinout, power/ground specification or revision-specific circuit diagram is supplied. The film itself notes different wire colors and later-shipment changes, so colors and numbered positions cannot be generalized. Obtain the matching verified diagram before making terminal connections.

  9. Dashboard lamp-head routing — 16:29–18:19. The harness is fed through the vent opening toward the lead brought in from the door, then routed across the dashboard. The source describes three dashboard lamp-head positions, including the reserved white connector and the lead routed behind the instrument area to the left vent. These are dashboard/trim lights, not a replacement of the instrument cluster.

  10. Footwell harnesses — 18:20–19:53. The demonstration uses four footwell-light harnesses with detachable male/female adapter connections. It joins the front harness to the dashboard/door feed, routes another harness beneath the lower trim toward the opposite front footwell, and connects the rear harnesses through the demonstrated front connections. The video shows a harness layout; it does not supply electrical test limits or establish interchangeability for a different kit.

  11. Dashboard strip and reassembly — 19:54–21:45. On the demonstrated three-color trim, the original light guide is removed and the replacement is seated in the original retainers with its connection end toward the steering-wheel side. The unused original lamp head is wrapped as shown. The source locates the main module near the right-front footwell and uses the supplied extension lead toward the dashboard strip. The trim linkage rod is refitted, the pieces aligned, and the vent and trim connectors reconnected before the assemblies are clipped back into place.

Demonstration and troubleshooting

The original page's effect-demonstration and troubleshooting headings contain no separate material. This source does not show an app-pairing sequence, an OEM coding procedure, a fault-code decision tree or a documented final 12-color functional test.

Before treating the installation as complete, obtain the matching kit/module diagram, vehicle-specific power-isolation and reassembly instructions, and a verified control/coding procedure. Resolve the source's fitment, module and wire-color differences. A connector number, port name or color in this archived demonstration must not substitute for a confirmed circuit assignment. Full video sound and picture review and a configuration-specific technical check remain pending.
