This guide covers the first-generation illuminated midrange covers shown in the archived W213 installation video, including front and rear door trim. It does not establish a model-year range or compatibility with other cover generations. Confirm the vehicle, door equipment and kit revision before installation.
The process notes below recover actions visible in the bound video. The original archive contains no separate product illustration or wiring diagram. The video still has inaccurate English captions and unresolved connector references; the electrical connections and destructive trim work require the instructions for the exact kit and vehicle.
Installation sequence shown in the video
- Access the front door trim. The demonstration introduces a T30 screwdriver at about 0:21 and identifies two screws in the door-pull area at about 1:00. T30 is the tool size shown, not a tightening specification. The archive does not provide the complete fastener map, torque values or vehicle electrical isolation procedure.
- Release the attached connectors and door-handle cable. The door-control connectors are handled at about 0:42–0:52. At about 1:28, the demonstrator releases the mechanical door-handle cable retainer and its end fitting. The caption calls this a “zipper”; it is the handle cable. Follow the verified connector-lock and cable-retainer procedure for the vehicle rather than pulling on wiring or the cable.
- Separate the decorative speaker trim. With the door panel removed, the demonstrator uses flat-blade screwdrivers around the rear retaining clips at about 1:45. These are not “one-word knives.” The trim and original grille are separated during the following section.
- Review the original grille fastening before replacement. At about 2:30–2:40, the video shows the back of the original grille and cutting at plastic fastening points. Its references to “glue” do not explain the fastening construction, the material to cut or the approved retention after replacement. Obtain that mechanical detail before cutting; this guide does not authorize cutting an unspecified clip or fastening point.
- Match and position the replacement cover. The original and illuminated cover are compared at about 2:56; two replacement covers are shown at about 3:15. Confirm the correct cover for each door and its required orientation. At about 3:23, the replacement is aligned with the opening. Check that it seats correctly without forcing the decorative surface.
- Route the cover wiring through the trim assembly. At about 3:45, the back of the installed cover shows the light ring and its leads. Keep the leads clear of the retaining points and confirm the routing against the kit instructions before refitting the trim. The original troubleshooting notes specifically identify trapped wiring as a possible cause of uneven colours.
- Verify the adapter connection before refitting the front panel. The demonstration shows blue adapter connectors at about 4:30, followed by refitting the handle cable at about 4:41. The English captions refer to a “6 plug.” That wording is not a verified pin number, cavity count or wiring instruction. The correct connector housing, port and adapter direction must be confirmed from the exact wiring diagram.
- Follow the rear-door sequence using its own trim and connections. At about 5:00–6:10, the rear trim clips, original grille, replacement cover and trim reassembly are shown. The front-door connection must not be assumed to apply to the rear door. Captions around 6:37 and 6:47 refer to both “6” and “5” plugs at different stages; the archive does not resolve what those numbers identify.
- Restore the panel and complete the vehicle-specific checks. Rear panel refitting is visible at about 7:05. The reviewed frames do not demonstrate an illuminated final effect or a complete functional test. Check trim retention, handle operation, restored door functions and lighting against the approved vehicle and kit procedure before treating the installation as complete.
Troubleshooting notes from the original archive
- Both the illuminated cover and the factory door ambient light are off. The source first suggests locking the vehicle and allowing a ten-minute sleep period. This is a source troubleshooting suggestion, not proof that a circuit is electrically isolated. It then suggests removing the added adapter and restoring the factory connection to compare operation. Use only the approved bypass procedure for the exact harness. If factory lighting returns, investigate the added adapter or its connection; if it remains off, investigate the factory circuit and other added connections. The source alone does not establish a definitive module or signal diagnosis.
- The factory door ambient light works, but the illuminated cover is off. Inspect for an unplugged connector, bent or damaged terminals and misaligned connections. The old translation uses “stitches” and “line foot” for these connector details. Its subsequent adapter-versus-lamp test is contradictory and cannot determine which component should be replaced. Obtain the correct test sequence and connector diagram before substituting an adapter or lamp assembly.
- Multicolour lighting is uneven, while a single colour looks normal. Check whether the cover assembly has trapped or pressed on a lead. The source also identifies the light assembly as a possible cause. This is a fault lead to investigate, not a confirmed diagnosis or a complete electrical test.
Bound installation video
The bound video is the archived first-generation W213 demonstration. Its English captions include incorrect tool and cable terminology, and its connector instructions need technical verification. No second-generation video has been substituted.
